In her essay, Kayla describes that a business’s cleanliness shapes the perception of patrons. “If the place does not look clean, my thoughts about the business immediately are negative, whether they may have good service, good food or good products, Kayla writes. “Custodial work is so important to maintaining and attracting customers.”
Kayla also cites her personal experience while working as a custodian for a local elementary school in the summer of 2020.
As Covid-19 continued to spread around the world, it was there that she gained respect for custodians, learning just how important the job was for ensuring that facilities remain clean and healthy. “I would not want to work in an environment that was not kept clean, visit an unsanitary business, or send my kids to school in such an environment,” she notes. “Although my impact may have been little, I felt pride in that I could justify making sure the elementary school was clean once I finished there.”
