Smart Goals For Facility Managers

What are smart goals?

First, what exactly are smart goals? Smart goals are: 

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound

That might look something like this: “I want to cut supply costs by 5% within the next three months.”

That’s a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goal. Or, if you’re shorthanded, maybe your smart goal is that you want to hire two new people for your team within the next two weeks. 

For contrast, a non-smart goal might be: “I want to cut costs this year.” It’s not a bad goal, but it’s also not specific (how much do you want to cut?), measurable (without specifics, you won’t know if you’ve reached your goal), or relevant (again, it doesn’t address any particular issue). It is achievable. Even if you only cut overall costs by a quarter of a percent, you’ve technically reached your vague goal. It is also time-bound, but a year seems like a long time for a non-specific goal. 

That’s your starting point when it comes to setting smart goals for facility managers or team leads. Now then, what are some of those goals?

1. Increase client satisfaction ratings by 10% in three months. The ironic thing about this goal is that the happier your clients are, the more challenging it is to achieve. That’s a good problem to have, though. Here’s one way you can measure this. Pass out a survey with questions regarding customer service, cleanliness of spaces throughout the facility (bathrooms, breakrooms, lobby, etc.), how quick the response to requests is, and anything else that might be appropriate. Make sure you get answers from a range of people. Take their comments and evaluations to heart and survey the same people in three months. Can you increase your score?

2. Keep up to date with equipment maintenance. Smart goals for facility managers aren’t just about customers. These goals need to include equipment, as well. Of course, to be a smart goal, you’ll need to get more specific, depending on the equipment you use and what the manufacturer suggests. But you can do that by listing all your equipment in a checklist and putting maintenance dates into your calendar. 

3. Increase employee retention by 50% year over year. Every time an employee leaves, morale goes down, and your expenses go up. Your remaining people have to pick up the slack, leading to increased burnout and a higher chance of injuries and accidents. There’s a lot that could be said for employee retention, but we’ll keep it short. Make sure you hire good people, train them thoroughly, and treat them and everyone on your team well. As far as smart goals for facility managers go, this is one of the keys to achieving every other goal. 

This might not seem like much. Happier clients, working equipment, and satisfied employees aren’t cited as often as hard work, grit, and doing a good job. Don’t dismiss them, though.
